Dr. Linda Harper has served as principal of Paul W. Bryant High School since 2013. In her time at PWBHS, her leadership has transformed the school.
With Bryant's most recent graduation rate of 91%, she has led PWBHS to being one of the most successful high schools in West Alabama. This success stems from her core belief that ALL students can be successful.
According to Dr. Harper, the key is to "build strong relationships with children. Make sure that children that enter the building feel valued, feel important. Kids, as I've mentioned before, will rise or fall to adult expectations. So we at Paul Bryant Hgh School believe in all of our kids. So when you believe in children they'll rise to expectations that you set. Students can achieve success if they set goals and you make a plan that helps them reach those goals."
The end result of the Paul W. Bryant culture change created by Dr. Harper is the annual Commitment Ceremony. At this ceremony, every graduating senior has the opportunity to declare their officially confirmed plans for their future. Bryant High School was the first high school in the state of Alabama to hold this academic signing day and the first to have 100% of their entire graduating class have confirmed and secure futures to either a university or a career.
"Our seniors who walk across the stage at the Commitment Ceremony have received a confirmation from a university, college, the military or a career opportunity,” Harper explained. “So 100% of our seniors are not just graduating to go home and do nothing. They have a plan in place when they leave us."
